S2, Episode 5: Create a Unique Baby Registry

In this episode, Kaitlin and I discuss:

What is BeHerVillage, and how does it work?

  • It is a platform for parents-to-be to register for support

  • There is a network of birth workers to choose from or a general fund

  • They can use a registry guide if they aren’t sure where to start

  • Friends and family can gift a portion of or the entirety of support, and the money is transferred straight into their account

  • Services on Be Her Village include photographers, doulas, lactation support, midwives, support groups, nutrition, pelvic floor providers, and more

What is wrong with the “traditional” registry?

  • Large corporations created the concept of a baby shower

  • They prey on new and expecting parents by marketing to them

  • New parents are told they need things to care for their baby

  • Previous generations did not do it this way, and many other countries don’t do this

  • A registry should provide support, not things

What systematic failures are present in the US causing new parents to struggle?

  • For many, they are unprepared for birth and postpartum

  • There is no community of professionals and loved ones guiding new parents

  • There is no guaranteed paternity leave

  • There isn’t enough education about the transition to parenthood

How can we convince friends and family to buy presents from this registry?

  • Don’t expect to change everyone’s mind

  • Talk about how impactful the services and support will be

  • Explain your story and what the services will do for you

What services have the most positive impact for new / expecting parents?

  • The basics include childbirth education, newborn education, birth doula, postpartum doula, lactation consultant, pelvic floor physical therapy, and maternal mental health care

  • There are extra services that people can add based on their needs

What are your favorite resources?

Enjoy the episode!

Kaitlin is the founder of BeHerVillage Registry - a registry for support - not stuff.
