S3, Episode 4: Build Your Village with Flor Campos

In this episode, Flor and I discuss:

What do you think having a “village” means?

  • A village is a way to communicate - asking for things that you need or things you want to share and having those exchanges.

  • For many, a village normalizes all incomes and educates about government benefits. People feel comfortable talking about WIC or other benefits.

What are the benefits of making your own village?

  • You can share resources.

  • You can ask them to care for your kids / care for their kids.

  • You can build friendships that last long-term.

If you don’t have a village, where do you start?

  • If you’re starting a group, remember that you want to find people that connect with you so be authentic.

  • Start with your values, like community.

  • Take many classes; there are many free or low-cost resources, like story time at the library.

How can people balance children, a job, and a village?

  • You can’t always give 100% to everything, so give what you can. Maybe it comes in waves.

  • Give yourself grace if you aren’t able to give more.

How can people connect with Mommies Unidas?

Enjoy the episode!
