Episode 10: What is the Bradley Method?

In this episode, you’ll hear Christy Gochez and I discuss:

What is the Bradley Method?

  • The Bradley Method is a comprehensive education about all options from nutrition to birth to postpartum

  • True informed consent

  • A partner-centered approach

What are your favorite relaxation techniques?

  • The best relaxation techniques combine physical, emotional, and mental

  • Water, essential oils, affirmations, massage

What can a partner do to support a birth parent?

  • Be present

  • Keep the environment safe and calm

  • Offer relaxation techniques

What are myths about the Bradley Method?

  • Some believe that it’s all about the partner, but it’s educating partners so they better support the birth parent

  • Some wonder if they should take it if they want pain medication. While it is focused on unmedicated birth, it will also include medication and other options. The right instructor won’t make anyone feel judged for their choices.

What can a birth parent convince their hesitant partner to join a Bradley class?

  • Bring a partner and let them decide for themselves.

  • Remember that most people haven’t been at a birth before, so they should be as prepared as possible.

What can birth parents do if they want a vaginal birth and interventions, such as an epidural?

  • Wait at home without it as long as possible.

  • Work baby down with different positions and movement before receiving the medication

  • After getting medication, try different positions on the bed, like hands and knees or side-lying.

What should people know if they want a birth with no interventions?

  • This is an internal journey for the birth person. So, remember your “why.”

  • Talk to a partner / doula about medical options and when to bring it up

What is your best pregnancy / birth / postpartum tip?

  • Prepare for postpartum

  • Prepare your partner / support person to support you during postpartum.
