confused by all the information about inserts? this post breaks it down

What are cloth diaper inserts?

when entering the world of cloth diapers, inserts can seem overwhelming or confusing, especially because they have so many names (boosters, doublers, and on and on.) this post will simplify inserts.

cloth diaper inserts are the parts of a diaper that make it absorbent. It might be sewn, stuffed, or placed inside. some diapers come with inserts (usually ones made of microfiber,) but they can also be purchased separately or made with items you already own.

inserts can be made from

what’s with all the names?

I’m with ya. it’s confusing. I don’t pay too much attention to the names and call them all inserts, but they do have different uses.

  • doubler - adds extra absorption (it doubles absorption, get it?)

  • liner - a cloth or disposable fabric placed on top of a diaper specifically for solid waste to keep skin from being wet

  • soaker - just another name for insert (again, confusing)

how do you use inserts?

almost all inserts (except microfiber) can be placed inside the diaper directly again a baby’s skin. an insert can also be snapped or stuffed into a diaper, depending on the type of diaper used. inserts can be added to a diaper more absorbent, either because your baby soaks through them quickly or is going through longer stretches at night.

to save money, use things you already have, like the dozens of receiving blankets, burp cloths, or baby towels you got at your baby shower.

Which ones are the best?

this depends on you and your baby. hemp and bamboo are the most absorbent, so they are usually favorites. for babies with sensitive skin, natural fibers work best: cotton, hemp, and bamboo. Natural fibers are also much easier to wash and dry. I find that old prefolds (layers of fabric sewn together) make great inserts and can be repurposed later as cleaning or dish towels.

overall

there isn’t a right or wrong way to use inserts; there isn’t a right or wrong fabric or type to use. as you use cloth diapers, you’ll find the ones that work best for you and your family.
